What a MathGPT-style solver does
MathGPT takes a problem written in text, in LaTeX or in a photograph, works out which method applies, and produces the solution with the intermediate steps shown. The useful part is rarely the final number — you could get that from a calculator. It is the middle: seeing which rule MathGPT reached for, and why that one.
What separates a solver worth using from a frustrating one is almost never the underlying model. It is whether the maths is typeset so you can read it, whether the steps are small enough to follow, and whether the tool tells you when it has had to guess at what you meant. MathGPT reads what you send, not what you meant
A solver receives a string of characters. "x^2+1/x" is genuinely ambiguous — is the 1/x under the exponent, or added after? Typed into the MathGPT formula editor there is no ambiguity, because the fraction is drawn rather than punctuated. That is most of the reason the math keyboard is here.
The same applies to photographs. A photo solver that pipes its OCR straight into the solver will answer a problem you did not set, and the only clue will be a strange answer. MathGPT shows you the transcription first, which costs one extra click and removes the whole failure mode.
Where MathGPT should not be trusted
Arithmetic slips happen. MathGPT is a language model, not a computer algebra system, and a long chain of manipulation is exactly where one wrong sign propagates to a confident wrong answer. That is why every MathGPT solution ends with a check that substitutes the answer back into the original problem — it catches the class of error the model is most likely to make.
Proof-style questions and anything asking "why" are where MathGPT is strongest, because the explanation is the deliverable. Heavy numeric work — long division of polynomials, big statistical tables — is where a second check is worth your time.
